Camp 2004

In 2004, C.O.P.I.I. worked with New Horizons, an organization that conducts a service learning camp for youth-at-risk in the Jiu Valley, Romania’s most impoverished coal mining region. Using ropes courses and mountaineering activities, our young mentors learned about cooperation and gained self confidence - something greatly lacking in Romania where young people have come to see their future as hopeless and see themselves as helpless to affect positive change.

As part of their experience the mentors joined the children in workshops, getting to know them personally and gaining first hand awareness of their power to make a lasting difference in the life of a child and in the future of their community.

The children’s workshops were once again run by IMPART, a team of Romanian art therapists who specialize in training care-givers from institutions in the use of creative arts as a means of nurturing, communication and healing.
